Like I mentioned earlier this week, I’ve been getting more into gardening, mostly growing my own food. It’s tough to keep that up in the winter! Most of my plants have seen better days

I recently ordered some fabric from My Vintage Voice on Etsy, and I was as wowed with the packaging as with the fabric itself! Instead of using a shipping envelope or other new packaging materials, this clever Etsian reused an empty chip bag to ship the fabrics. Don’t you fret, though! My beautiful vintage florals didn’t arrive covered in grease and salt. Here’s what she did: Turned the empty bag of chips inside out Washed the grease and crumbs away Dried it thoroughly Wrapped up the fabric, safe and sound Easy peasy! You could probably wash a big batch at once in a sinkful of hot, soapy water and hang them to dry in the shower to save yourself some time, if you wanted to upcycled your own chip bag packaging.

Here’s a great Vertical Garden design from Vertical Earth Gardens, perfect for space deprived farmers and fresh veggie lovers. Vertical Earth Gardens was founded by Mark DeMitchell and Mike Tarzian, oringinally as a project to fit a garden in the limited space on the side of their northern San Diego home. With little space to grow out, they grew up, employing a hydroponic system that bloomed fresh veggies and a new business. Now DeMitchell and Tarzian build and maintain custom vertical gardens for their local customers. By using hydroponics and a cascading system of pipes they are able to efficiently use space, light and water while not being limited to vine growing plants. According to the Vertical Earth Gardens site, their system uses 80% less water than traditional garden beds.

Spring is officially here! The bulbs in my garden are blooming, the days are getting longer and warmers, and I just spotted my first six-legged friend crawling on the kitchen floor! It’s tempting to reach for toxic pesticides, but these toxic substances are linked to all manner of health problems in humans, and they’re not so hot for the environment, either. Here are a few more eco-friendly options for keeping ants, roaches, and flies out of your home.
