Quick Energy Saver: Clean Your Refrigerator Coils

Cleaning your refrigerator coils can make it 6 percent more efficient , and some say it can improve the efficiency even more! Last week, we had an energy assessment from our local utility company. Did you know that many utilities will perform an assessment for free? I called Georgia Power, and a week later a very nice fellow showed up to look at our insulation and areas where we could be having air leaks and other energy sucks.

Spotted: Mini Parks

Remember Park(ing) Day ? Well, the city of San Francisco has turned the once a year event into something that businesses, and even private citizens, can celebrate every day! Rather than transforming a parking space into a mini park for just one day, San Francisco businesses can get permits for permanent mini parks in front of their establishments. These “parklets” are springing up all over San Francisco and Oakland , turning asphalt into social green space.

Smart Tools, Easy Electricity Savings

Energy audits coupled with efficiency upgrades are some of most sensible things a home or business owner can do to lower utility bills and contribute to a cleaner future, but if you are renting or hesitant to make the initial investment required by solar panels and weatherstripping, start with these smart tools and an electricity audit . Auto-timed powerstrips allow you to deny power to gadgets for the times they’re not in use.  This is especially good for TV sets and computers which draw the most electricity when “off” and are likely to be idle during daytime hours.  Some entertainment system burn 720w/day in this way.  The 8-outlet plug (listed here for $20) is one of the easiest ways to reduce your load.  If you prefer to buy locally, you may want to call ahead, because not many stores carry these. Opt for CFLs, LEDs & task-oriented lighting .  If you haven’t already, it’s time to nix the halogens.

Poop Power: Dog-Fueled Park Lamps

We talked not too long ago about generating energy with bodily fluids , and more weird sources of renewable energy seem to be popping up every day. Now, a park in Cambridge, Massachusetts is trying out lamp posts powered with dog poop. If common courtesy isn’t enough to get dog owners to pick up after their pets, maybe this MIT-funded project will do the trick! The Park Spark Project uses an underground Methane Digester to turn doggie waste into usable energy

Wind-powered knitting machine

With the power of the wind, a knitting machine knits from the outside towards the inside of a building. The knitted material is harvested from time to time and rounded-off in individually packaged scarves. Each scarf has its own label which tells you in how much time it has been knitted and on which date.
