Remember those waste-free organic shampoo and conditioner bars I talked about a couple of weeks ago? The lovely ladies at Greyslater have offered up a set to one Green Upgrader reader! It doesn’t make a lot of sense to spring for pricey organic shampoos that come in a single use plastic bottle, right

Last week, I talked about the recycled, reusable coffee mugs that my husband picked up, so I was pleased as punch to run across this infographic on just how much waste you can avoid by bringing your own cup to the coffee shop. Check it: I knew that those disposable cups were wasteful, but it’s still pretty staggering when you think about how much waste they generate over a single customer’s lifetime.

Getting coffee on the go can come with a lot of waste, but finding the right reusable to go mug can be a challenge! My husband, Dave, and I are both big coffee drinkers, and that means that whether he’s heading out to work or we’re hitting the road for a vacation, we’re most likely packing a to go coffee mug. The result is that Dave is sort of a collector of reusable mugs. We’ve been through many, many reusable mugs in our house

We’ve talked before about the trouble with biodegradable plastics , and a new study highlighted yet another issue with these plant-based plastic alternatives: in the landfill, biodegradable plastics break down and produce methane. We’ve talked here before about the scourge of single-use plastic , so you can imagine how it warmed my heart to run across this video, where kids are taking plastic bottles and upcycling them into building materials: 1800 children in Guatemala collected 2.5 tons of trash and over 10,000 plastic bottles and used them to help build a school for themselves.

It’s not breaking news that our plastic bottle consumption is out of control . It’s estimated that in the US, we consume roughly 25 billion plastic bottles a year! It’s all a bit disheartening, but thankfully recycling is at an all time high, and there are some great companies doing some great things to reduce the amount of waste pouring into our landfills. I was psyched to find one of those companies right down the road from me
