I’ve long been interested in the tiny house movement and admired the homes and the resolve of those who live in them. I am particularly fond of tiny houses with wheels, but that is another story altogether. My family of four has recently moved into a smaller house (all four of us, plus the two dogs are unlikely to ever fit into a tiny house, so smaller will have to do for us) and in the process of doing so, we’ve had to get rid of some of our excess stuff. We’ve shed furniture mostly, but I’ve also cleared out and passed on clothes and toys to make our home less cluttered.

Greendrinks.org describes itself as an organic, self-organising network of people interested in green living and/or who work in the environmental field. It’s a great place to meet people who view the environment the way you do. I’ve attended the Newlands meet-up at Josephine Mill before, and met a guy who builds wind turbines in his backyard, an alternative energy expert, composting toilet specialist, artist, blogger and architect.

Swish, swish, swish. It’s all the rage. Eco-fashionistas, this is for you. There are two swishing events happening in the next little while, one in London (UK) and one in Cape Town (RSA) . See their details below. Incase you can’t read the fine print, here’s a close-up: For the Cape Town (Northern suburbs) event, check out the Fashion Exchange website or their Facebook page for more info. Take note that you will need a ticket for the Cape Town event . Here are the basics: And for the activist at a loose end next weekend, why not join in with a mass action called by London Rising Tide, London Tar Sands Network and Climate Camp London.

I got an email from Sarah at the Sierra Club this morning saying that 25 finalists have been chosen for “The best internship on earth” that I wrote about here a while back. I’ve been watching the finalists videos, and my favourite is Jessalyn, finalist #25

We are moving in a few months, and a couple of nights ago my hubby and I were discussing the possibility of planting indigenous saplings on the bare patch of earth that is opposite our new house, both to cancel out the carbon footprint of the building work that we are going to be undertaking at the house (very minor, but nonetheless) and also to help cut out traffic noise as they grow (we’re one road back from a very busy road). Turns out there are some who have been doing pavement pimping for years , and they’re encouraging you to pimp your pavement too . And no need to stop there, how about seed bombing the entire neighbourhood. Be careful in ecologically sensitive areas, be sure to only bomb with indigenous seeds where appropriate.

Here’s a head’s up on a new, exciting opportunity from the Sierra Club that could just be The Best Internship on Earth. One lucky young person will get to spend this summer travelling around the US to Sierra Club’s outdoor youth programs, including Inner City Outings, Volunteer Vacations, and Building Bridges to the Outdoors. The intern will video-blog about all of the outdoor adventures that he or she will have (backpacking, rafting, hiking, etc). As the cherry on top, the selected intern will receive a $2,500 stipend and be outfitted with $2,000 worth of gear from The North Face and Planet Explore! No previous outdoor or video experience is required. Applicants just have to be between the ages of 18 and 25 and have a real passion for exploring, enjoying, and protecting the outdoors. The internship is open to U.S
