This article was written by Mark King, for guardian.co.uk on Wednesday 25th August 2010 16.14 UTC Customers at the UK’s leading supermarkets used 43% fewer carrier bags in 2009-10 than they did in 2006, when figures were first recorded, with 6.1bn single-use bags used in 2009-10 against 10.7bn four years earlier. According to the Waste & Resources Action Programme (Wrap), the amount of material used to make carrier bags has reduced by 39,700 tonnes per year in the past four years, but figures for May 2010 alone indicate that we may be seeing a return to greater usage. Data collected from Asda , Cooperative Group , M&S , Sainsbury’s , Somerfield (now owned by the Cooperative Group), Tesco and Waitrose shows that during the past year, total bag usage in the UK fell by 0.7bn, or 10%.

Many big music festivals are sloppy, dirty affairs–trash is strewn all over the place, there are few easy options for recycling and composting, and sustainability is the last thing on attendees’ minds. But San Francisco’s Outside Lands music festival, a two-day (formerly three day) production in Golden Gate Park, is different. Last year, the festival’s organizers did an impressive job of putting all things green front and center. This year was no different.

Debbie of life untitled has been using charcoal on her recycling. She says it’s cheaper than using drawing paper. It’s a great idea and asks the question: what other recyclables and rubbish can be used as canvasses for art?

I’m continually amazed with the insights and advice in the comments around here! We had some great discussion about reducing our dependence on natural gas and on choosing an eco friendly dish soap that was too useful not to highlight! Natural Gas Commenter Jake had a lot to say about conserving natural gas. He suggests: Insulate & seal leaks in ductwork that goes through garages / attics. Let the sun in during the day.
