The modernized planet is a step rat race that seems to never ever take a break or even even a little bit. As part of this world, have to find something to tweak by becoming a bit fast paced ourselves. Fast meals, even faster cars, fast fast FAST! We have come to be a collection of people of tiny attention spans and incredible impatience. We can multi-task while multi-tasking.

It’s not difficult to assume that in this blazing fast place of going from 1 thing to the next, we things that are “ready to go”. That’s why plastic water bottles are currently popular today, even with all the environmental labels that we are all familiar with. It’s hard for us to change things that we are all accustomed to.. Instead, we go around the problem by promoting recycling. We may not stop using plastic water bottles, but at least we recycle! Well it’s a start at least.

Along with all of these things, it has become more common place for people to fill their water bottles or soda bottles in an effort to reuse these items to help out with this environmental problem. The issue is that all of these kinds of plastic drinking containers and soda bottles are not supposed to be reused again and again. A plastic known as polyethylene terephthalate (or PET) is a major component of a plastic water bottle and was not meant for reuse. One of the issues for this is bacteria. When you use a water bottle the bacteria from your mouth move into the water bottle, better known as backwash (bleh!). This like any dirty item can reproduce and cause illness in those with low immune systems.

Now you may be saying, “My water bottle is cleaned daily with soap and hot water!” That is great, but that is where the second issue comes from. You may have been hearing a line being tossed around lately, “bpa free”. BPA is bisphenol-A and is a manufactured material in a lot of plastics. When you wash a plastic type bottle in hot water, it causes BPA to be released into the bottle from within the plastic. It has not yet been validated that long term effects come from the exposure to BPA but there are ongoing case studios showing that this is a possibility.

So what can we do? When it comes to these types of water bottles, the only thing to do is recycle it. The only solution comes in buying a certified reusable water bottle created for this kind of thing. There are many out on the market that come in all shapes sizes and functions. One is a Collapsible Water Bottle which is perfect for people worried about carrying something bulky. They are specifically made to be reused on a daily basis. Just look for things like “BPA free” and mention of bacteria resistance of some sort and you should be alright. Don’t reuse those cheap plastic water bottles you purchase from the gas station, they will only do you harm in the long run. Spend a few bucks and get a reusable drinking water container and you will do yourself a great favor.

We talked not too long ago about generating energy with bodily fluids , and more weird sources of renewable energy seem to be popping up every day. Now, a park in Cambridge, Massachusetts is trying out lamp posts powered with dog poop. If common courtesy isn’t enough to get dog owners to pick up after their pets, maybe this MIT-funded project will do the trick! Amongst the recession and the coalition government, the environment is a topic which continues to dominate the news. News reporting on Global warming reached a high around the G8 summit during which the worlds 8 richest countries debated ways to halt the erosion of the ozone layer. Most notable was former vice president and 2000 presidential candidate Al Gore’s film, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ which was a filmed talk by Gore himself accompanied with animated infographics and evocative images of polar bears falling through ice sheets. This performed well commercially and really brought home the true cost of global warming as well as informing the masses of exactly how it was happening.

Steps are being made all over the world to combat the problem and the UK is no exception. Cars are one of the major polluters and small restrictions are gradually being brought in which will increase the cost of motoring, this means cars will be unaffordable for many, making environmentally friendly choices the only option. It is not all doom and gloom for car lovers however as companies are working on electric and hybrid vehicles, you may think these are all tree hugging shopping trolleys but the Telsa paints a different picture, this is the first electric supercar. Everyone can make a difference is the main message governments are trying to get across and this is true.

We all know that products like Siemens appliances can use a lot of juice. Energy saving light bulbs can save us a fortune as well as saving the planet, these have been around for years. Things which take less than a second to complete like turning your TV off fully might not seem like it would have much of an effect, but total this up over a year and it amounts to a significant saving in co2 output. One thing you may not be aware of that can save tones of power is your washing machine.

To heat up water requires electricity and you may surprised to learn that washing machines, whether they be miele washing machines or lg washing machines uses more power to heat water than either your bath or shower. Simply turning your temperature dial down to 30 degrees instead of 40 will make a huge difference. Don’t worry this won’t leave you with stinky clothes, the wash may just take a little longer. A small price to pay for saving the world!
